Not a Part of MAGA Agenda

Green Day closed out the second night of Coachella 2025, finally making their debut at the festival after more than three decades in the spotlight.

Since their post-pandemic return, Coachella has been leaning on its California ‘90s rock roots in a much more overt way — first with blink-182 in 2023, then 2024’s No Doubt and Sublime reunions, and now Green Day, who have been at the legacy level for years and had still never headlined. So seeing them provide a proper rock show as one of Saturday’s marquee performance felt strangely right this year, especially given Green Day’s “down with authority” ethos and the painfully urgent relevance of their most political tracks. After the sweaty, bombastic decadence of Charli XCX and the random-but-deeply-welcome Bernie Sanders cameo at Clairo’s set, Green Day’s sweeping bravado and crowd-pleasing mentality was welcome.

Still punks at heart, Green Day delivered a few provocative moments that will surely enrage the right-wing outrage machine. The band notably kicked off their set with “American Idiot,” which included the adapted lyric, “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda.” Later, they referenced “kids in Palestine” during a performance of “Jesus of Suburbia.” But for the most part, it was business as usual for Green Day, who delivered 90 minutes of pop-punk sing-a-longs and plenty of energetic spirit.

It’s refreshing to see a rock group still take the reins at Coachella every now and then. Green Day, for example, is a reliable festival staple — not for delivering groundbreaking, future-defining performances, but for creating unforgettable moments and anthems that unite the crowd.

After playing the second weekend of Coachella 2025, Green Day will also headline festivals like Welcome to Rockville and BottleRock Napa Valley. Grab your passes here.

Earlier this week, Green Day announced an expanded deluxe edition of Saviors, featuring the previously unreleased song “Smash It Like Belushi.” It’s out on May 23rd via Reprise Records, and pre-orders are ongoing.
