The 911 Speedster Is About To Make A Dramatic Return

  • Porsche appears to be working on a new 911 Speedster.
  • The model incorporates cues from the GT3 and 911 S/T.
  • It’ll likely have a 4.0-liter six-cylinder with at least 503 hp.

Porsche currently lists 23 different versions of the 911, ranging from the entry-level Carrera to the range-topping 911 Turbo 50 Years. There’s something for everyone, but spy photographers have snapped the first photos of a highly anticipated variant.

We’re talking about the upcoming 911 Speedster, which will likely serve as a last hurrah for the 992.2. It was recently spied undergoing testing in southern Europe and resembles a 911 GT3 convertible.

As you can see, the prototype features a familiar front end with a ventilated hood and a sporty front bumper. They’re joined by a prominent splitter and center-locking wheels. A closer inspection also reveals new fender vents that recall those used on the limited edition 911 S/T.

The rear end features the bumper and center-mounted exhaust from the regular GT3, but the 911 Speedster eschews a rear wing. We can also see a different engine vent, which appears to echo the one used on the aforementioned S/T. Additional changes are likely and the model could have a unique roof and deck lid.

Powertrain details remain unconfirmed, but we can expect a 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine. The output is the biggest mystery as the GT3 is rated at 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm), while the 911 S/T had 518 hp (386 kW / 525 PS) and 343 lb-ft (465 Nm)

Production will likely be limited and the last 911 Speedster was capped at 1,948 units. It arrived in 2019 and featured a 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine with 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS) and 347 lb-ft (470 Nm) of torque. This enabled the manual-only model to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in four seconds flat, before hitting a top speed of 193 mph (310 km/h).
